Description

Spaniel (American Water)

Spaniel (American Water): This brown water spaniel (the original name for the breed) was developed in the Mid West of the United States as a duck retriever and also used to flush out waterfowl – so it combines Spaniel and Retriever properties. The American Water Spaniel shares some similarities in appearance with the Irish Water Spaniel in coat type and its love of water – making it ideal for going out in boats with the hunters and diving off to retrieve shot birds. It was recognised by the AKC in 1937, and is little seen outside of the USA.

Spaniel (American Water) General appearance

This breed does not as yet have a Kennel Club breed standard and therefore it may not be exhibited at Kennel Club licensed breed shows.

Faults

Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog and on the dogÂ’s ability to perform its traditional work.

Note

Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
